You'll feel confident teaching your child to:
- Hear the tricky sounds in the different words: ch in Tuesday, truck, tree
- Understand that there are different spellings that sound the same: jug, gem, bridge, sausage
- Understand that there are different sounds that are spelled the same: gem, game
- Sound out words by pulling apart the sounds (segmenting): b-r-i-dge, s-au-s-a-ge
- Read and match each sound to the correct letter/digraph:read bridge, hear b-r-i-dge, spell bridge
- Put the sounds back together (blending) to read the word: b-r-i-dge makes the word bridge
Activities included:
- Looks Different Sounds The Same Reference Posters: Become familiar with the different ways to spell the same sound. These don’t need to be memorised - many adults still don’t get these right! Read through the different words on each poster - can you hear the common consonant sounds?
- Reading Reference Pack: Read through each word. Listen for the common sound, paying attention to the different spellings. Sound out the words first (segmenting), spell the words and then read the words (blending).
