• Understand that there are different spellings that sound the same: jug, gem, bridge, sausage
• Understand that there are different sounds that are spelled the same: gem, game
• Sound out words by pulling apart the sounds (segmenting): b-r-i-dge, s-au-s-a-ge
• Read and match each sound to the correct letter/digraph:read bridge, hear b-r-i-dge, spell bridge
• Put the sounds back together (blending) to read the word: b-r-i-dge makes the word bridge
